The Barefoot Investor, by Scott Pape, has been recommended to me over and over again in the past couple of years.
It has helped my cousin sort out her finances and figure out how to make them work for her, instead of against her. AND she’s enjoyed doing it.
It has also sold over 100,000 copies to become one of the best selling Australian books ever.
So why is it so popular, and what makes it different?
Well, it’s readable and funny, as well as life changing. That’s super helpful, because I can’t tell you the number of useful books I haven’t read, because although they sounded like a great idea at the time, they just didn’t hold my attention.
And – and this is important – it tells you EXACTLY what to do, in a step-by-step formula. Like: open this account, then do this; call this person, and say this; invest money here, and not there. And “all with a glass of wine in your hand.”
Which is why, I guess, Pape is planning to update it every year – because, as he says in the “Welcome to the 2018-2019 update”, while the principles of wealth building stay the same, “politicians (and banks) meddle with things.”
And the new book coming I am getting for my 16 year old, who’s recently got his first job. (So it’s time he started thinking about his future, right?)
According to Pape: “There are only ten things every kid needs to know about money, and you can teach them over dinner, once a week.” Sounds good to me.
Maybe my kid can read it and teach the rest of us instead?
